I've had quite a few enquiries about whether my book Working the Cloud will be available to buy in time for Christmas - which sadly it won't. But if you would like to buy it for someone as a gift I'm offering to send a personalised digital card to the email address of your choice on Christmas Day, informing the lucky recipient of your generous gift and telling them to expect delivery of the actual tome in March, when it will be officially available... I *might even do a video message, mentioning the recipient by name, although I reserve the right to just do a written message if there are too many people queuing up for this.
Either way it will be totally awesome and sent with a shed load of love and Christmas cheer!
So if you want to take me up on the offer just use the link above to go to Amazon, put in your pre-order and then email me a screenshot or copy of your digital receipt to info@katerussell.co.uk. Include the name of the person you're buying it for, a personal note about why you have bought it for them if you like, and an email address to send the message to ON CHRISTMAS DAY... Yes, I am really going to sit down at my computer with a glass of bucks fizz and send these messages on Christmas morning!
Happy Christmas all :)

I'm lucky enough to be heading out to Azerbaijan for the Internet Governance Forum next week to chair a discussion for Nominet about how we ensure the future of creative content online. You can find out more about the discussion and the event here.
It's going to be a really interesting debate as we'll be trying to get to the bottom of how we start thinking about digital rights and IP in a world where the content distribution channels are changing faster than you can realistically make policy to regulate them.
I'm going to be writing some articles and making some podcasts while I'm out there so will keep you informed about where you can read/listen to them when I get back, but I'm hoping to get a little input from you ahead of the discussion.
When we had a policy meeting to inform the content of this debate earlier in the year here in London one of the things that came out of that meeting was that we need to be imagining what the future of digital content distribution might be a decade from now so that we can plan policy and regulation to support and encourage creativity tomorrow, rather than constantly trying to run to catch up with today's changing technology.
So here’s my question to you (and the best answers may well be read out and used during the discussion in Azerbaijan):
Q: How do you think digital content will be distributed 10 years from now?
I’m going to leave it as open as that as I really want to hear all sorts of ideas, cobering music, movies, written word, newspapers, magazines… everything.. what do you think it will look like? How will YOU be consuming content? On which platform? How will you pay for it? Or how will its creators get paid for their work?
You can leave your comments below or email me directly on info at katerussell dot co dot uk.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts..

Those of you who follow me on Twitter might remember that I visited Meridian Radio back in September, taking part in Stephen Hadley's 2-hour long Sunday morning show broadcast online and to patients, staff and visitors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich.
While I was there I also visited the children's ward, Sarafi Ward, where the staff do an amazing job caring for all sorts of children with all sorts of health problems from short to long term. Like all NHS hospitals there isn't much money so Stephen and I took along some games and toys to donate to the ward to help keep the children occupied and entertained during their difficult time being treated in hospital (and some nice herbal teas for the nurses!).
It was a good start - but it wasn't enough! On speaking to the staff at the ward I learned that they actually have a good selection of games consoles and electronics, but hardly any games or DVDs to use with them. Well, as you can imagine I went white and all shaky at the thought of this (it could also have been the late night out speaking at the Pod Delusion birthday bash the night before that did this though) -- but digital entertainment and games? This is surely something I can help with!?
So, I have decided, with your help, to run a small campaign. I would like your help to get a decent amount of second-hand/new games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs to the ward to help keep these children entertained while they stay in hospital. I have already spoken to a few of my PR contacts, and there is some exciting news coming soon on that front, but if YOU want to help here's how:
Send games, DVDs & blu-ray films, either second-hand or new (do not send cash or cheques, just games & movies) in the following formats:
Here's the address to send them to:
C/O Carol Sullivan-Wallace
Safari ward
Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Stadium Road
Woolwich
London
S.E.18 4QH
If you want to send an old console you're no longer using that would also be very welcome. Any hand held consoles are desperately welcome as they can take them into theatre for children who need distracting while their aesthetic is being administered.
If you don't have anything to send you can still help, by sharing this post with your own social networks and encouraging your contacts to do the same. I will keep the campaign running on this page and post any significant updates here as amendments. Please, if you're going to send something to the ward, post about it in the comments!! Tell us how you are helping and this will hopefully encourage others to do the same.
Come on, take a look around your games & DVDs... how many of them are just gathering dust because you finished them ages ago? Are you keeping them in case you *might* want to play them again one day? Trust me.. you most likely won't. So do something really good with them instead and make the children of Safari Wards' stay in hospital a little less stressful.
Thank you :) I knew I could rely on you...

I know it's been ages since I wrote anything here but there will be more news very soon on continued posting and what's going on with my book, Working the Cloud, which you can now pre-order HERE.
I wanted to post this quickly though today as it's the first time I have attempted a talk like this.. I was invited to speak at the Pod Delusion 3rd birthday bash (my favourite skeptical podcast you should listen to if you're into interesting stuff). I hope you enjoy it! Please do let me know what you think in the comments below :)
(It does contain boobs a couple of swears, sorry if you're offended!)

In a little under 12 hours as I write this post, one of the most exciting celestial missions will come to a dramatic climax. At 10:31pm PDT (6:31am in the UK) Mars Curiosity Rover will crash through the Martian atmosphere, in an event experts are dubbing "7 minutes of terror". You can watch the whole thing play out live on the mission website, where you can also follow the robots mission as it spends one Martian year on the planet's surface.

You might have noticed that service didn't resume in July? (although no-one actually mentioned it, I'll assume you were all being polite!)
As you know, I am currently hard at work writing a book – Working the Cloud: the ultimate guide to making the Internet work for you and your business. It’s aimed at anyone who wants to run their business more effectively, using the many tools, resources and communities you can find online.
I will confess I'm finding that writing this book is taking a lot more of my time & energy than I expected. I want to do a really good job, so I am continuing the suspension of posts here until I deliver the first draft in October. I hope you understand, and continue to browse through these pages for the many great websites and apps already posted. Service will be FULLY resumed in October.
You can find out more about the book here. There’s nothing on the main website yet, but I will be updating the social sites as I go along. I have also published a Storify to record this epic jouney in my life; from idea to first published book!
Thanks for your patience & support xoxo

I am taking a holiday... shocking I know! As those who follow me on twitter know, today I am packing up from my weekend at Nova Festival and now I need to get stuck in and make a serious dent on writing my book!! So I have decided to take a couple of weeks off from posting to this site... There is plenty of back catalogue content for you to enjoy, and of course I will still be providing my weekly fix of all things webby on BBC Click, so I hope you will forgive me for attempting to have a life beyond the web for just a couple of weeks!! ;)
Service will resume on 23rd July... Thanks for your support & understanding. I will leave you in the very capable hands of my favourite video cook - Drunk Kitchen (contains adult language!! & drinking.. so sorry if you're offended)

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of human space flight this year a documentary was published on Youtube, recreating Yuri Gagarin's first spaceflight using cameras and astronauts on the ISS. Check out firstorbit.org for more information, or just sit back and watch the embedded movie here (it's going to be good for my traffic stats if you do!)
I’m not sure that the offered Android & iPhone smartphone apps bring enough to the party to make them worth paying for unless you want to share the film on the move, but I certainly don’t begrudge the documentary makers for trying to make a bit of money out of the venture either.
We don't get much summer here in the UK, but take advantage when the weather allows and get outside to do some gardening. MyFolia is a social gardening tool that helps you get organised by tracking what you’ve planted and what jobs need doing to keep your flowers flourishing, and share your progress with the green-fingered community.
